The Sustainable Forestry Incentive Act (SFIA) is a great benefit to many family woodland owners.  In every legislative session, the act comes under scrutiny, with some advocating cuts or even elimination.  This session is no different.  Here is the latest update written on May 9th by Bruce ZumBahlen, chair of MFA's Government Relations Committee.  Stay tuned because the situation is likely to change almost daily.

With support from the Blandin Foundation, MFA has produced two public service announcements touting the contributions private woodlands make to Minnesota's overall forest economy. Read the associated press release and then listen to and download PSA #1 and PSA #2.

The Tree Farm National Convention is coming to Minnesota July 25-27, 2013. In addition to speakers and exhibits, visit with Dave and Beverly Medvecky at their Big Woods Farm, a certificed family tree farm.  Click here for more information including registration.

Sustaining Healthy Forests and Landscapes through Best Planting Practices On May 21 at Cloquet Forestry Center, the University of Minnesota will present new information about planting practices and methods that can increase survival and growth, extend the planting season, and provide an alternative to heeling in seedlings.  The discussions will focus on large and small bare root stock, container grown woody plants and balled and burlapped stock.  For registration information and details on Sustaining Healthy Forests and Landscapes through Best Planting Practices click here.

The Minnesota Forest Resources Council announced the release of the newly revised Sustaining Minnesota Forest Resources: Voluntary Site-level Forest Management Guidelines. Changes made include modification of the 1) allowable infrastructure (roads and landings), 2) leave (green) tree retention guidelines, 3) biomass guidelines as related to slash retention, and 4) riparian management zone characteristics. The complete revised guidebook is only available in electronic (Adobe PDF) format.  Links: To get a pdf of the revised guidebook or go to the Minnesota Forest Resource Council website to read a summary of the guidelines.

Every woodland owner has a different reason for owning their land.  For example, woodland owners may own large tracts of land and view their woodland as a financial asset.  They may have inherited their land and view their land as a heirloom.  To better understand how to target programs for woodland owners MFA hosted Tools for Engaging Landowners Effectively on April 16, 17 and 18, 2013.  This event was supported by funding through the USDA Forest Service State and Private Forestry and the Minnesota DNR.

Over 100 private woodland owners braved icy, snowy roads to attend the The Up North Woodland Workshop in Grand Rapids on Saturday, March 9th.  Click here to see photos from the event.  Five the the sessions were recorded live and will be available here.
